You can’t turn on your TV or flip through the pages of a magazine today without being bombarded with the term “green”. From local television stations to national magazines, everyone is talking about the environment — finally.
I would like to welcome you to the exciting first issue of Modern Traveler (MT for short)! Think of us as a combination of People Magazine, Travel & Leisure and Budget Travel — celebrity cover stories and fantastic ideas on numerous facets of green travel.
Our goal is to provide our readers with the resources they need to experience extraordinary vacations while, at the same time, being responsible travelers.
The adventures we feature in this issue and those to come help preserve the environment and culture and sustain the local economies of the places we visit. In addition, we will give you a taste of experiential travel. Experiential travel is more than visiting an exotic locale and taking home a suitcase full of souvenirs. It’s about bringing home a collection of memories that will last a lifetime — everything you see,
eat, learn, think and feel.
Experiential travel doesn’t mean spending your entire vacation working your fingers to the bone for a good cause. Take for example our contributors piece on the Great Barrier Reef in our Encompass department. For a minimum of four working hours per day you are compensated with free lodging on an exotic island. So it is not all giving from the visitor side.
In this issue we also preview the Cornerstones of Modern Travel, six areas to take into account before, during and after your journey: Modes of Transportation, Offsets and Environmental Policy, Dollars Spent
Locally, Environmental Conservation, Respect for Local Culture, and Natural Resource Use. We provide an overview in our Going Green department and will explore each area in detail in the next six issues of MT.
Shortly, our Web site ( www.moderntravelermag azine.com) will feature monthly Web Exclusives, insightful blogs and an e-newsletter that will keep you up-to-date on the latest in experiential and responsible travel
Visit our Web site today and sign up to receive the Spring issue free when it debuts in April. The first 50 readers who subscribe to MT will also receive a copy of the e-Book Shades of Green, an entertaining and practical guide to going green your own way written by Julie Vincent and Robert E. Dittmer.
Our next issue will feature the top ecolodges and an up close look and
review of the some of the top Caribbean resorts as our publisher, Bob McElwee, goes exploring with his camera.
In the meantime, sit back and enjoy Modern Traveler at your home, school or office — wherever you are in the world. And, don’t miss your chance to sign up for one year of MT for $9, which is less than $3 per issue. Sign up today.
