“Animals are such agreeable friends –
they ask no questions, they pass no criticisms.”

PETs
Don’t Leave Home
Without Them
Like their human companions, pets have specific needs that require
advanced planning and preparation before hitting the road. Keep these
travel tips in mind as you and your pet pack for your next journey.

PET TIP OF THE MONTH When traveling, pack a simple travel-size first aid kit for your pet, similar to the one you have at home, along with an antidiar-rheal medication that is safe for animals.

Lodging: More and more accommodations are now pet-friendly. Call directly to find out any restrictions, fees, etc. If you are staying with friends or family, ask in advance if a pet is welcome and make sure they have the appropriate accommodations.

Identification: Be sure your pet is properly identified with a current tag or microchip. Keep records of your tag and microchip numbers readily available.

Collar/Leashes: Be sure your collars and leashes are in good condition. Pack an extra set just in case.

Comfortable Bedding: Bring along a pet bed or familiar item in order to provide a sense of home.

Kennels & Carriers: Bring a portable kennel or carrier for times when your pet will be left alone at the place you are staying. If you leave your pet alone in a hotel room, place a “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door and inform the front desk that you will be away.

Vaccinations: Before leaving, consult your vet to verify your pet is in good health to travel. Have both proof of rabies vaccination and a current health certificate (within ten days of travel) with you when crossing state or international borders.

Food: Try to maintain your pet’s normal routine in regards to feedings. When traveling by car, give your pet small amounts of food and plan to stop every two hours for exercise.
