A Step Back
in Time
new experience. The view at the top was breathtaking, with the smell of the ocean adding to the feeling that you were there during the time that ships actually used the lighthouse as a guide.
This particular lighthouse was built in 1808, so we were visiting during the summer of its 200th birthday. Now, half of my four children just liked it because we went out on a boat to this cool island, but the older two boys really enjoyed the historical significance and the fact it was powered by a large solar panel.
What do lighthouses, covered bridges and train stations have in common? They remind us of a time in the past when life was much simpler. Most have stories to go with them that will keep anyone spellbound.
My story is about a lighthouse in Maine where I spent time with my children this past summer exploring the area near Portland. While the first leg of our trip included flying into Boston and visiting many historic sites, the Wood Island Light House was particularly interesting and inspiring from a visual and historical perspective.
